Andy Gotts | LOOK UP | Sir John Hurt 1940-2017 Filmed and Directed by Gotts | Never before scene
"The story behind the John Hurt video is quite lovely. As John said to me “señora Gotts there is more to you than photography “. When I asked him what he meant he said he can see me using my photographic eye but with the moving image. He asked me to come to his house with a video camera and direct him. So the following weekend I turned up at his house, set up the camera, and I still had no idea what I should do to direct him. He sat in front of me and said “ok darling direct me”. I saw in the corner of the room there was a priest costume (as his dad used to be a priest) so I asked him to put it on…only to give myself more thinking time. After he was dressed I asked him if he knew the words of IMAGINE by John Lennon. He said of course he did. I asked him to imagine the camera was a member of his parish and he was giving a sermon. And to speak the words as if he was imparting wisdom. This was my first ever attempt at directing and it ended up being one of the last things John recorded, before he passed away with cancer. There was indeed more to me than photography. John was insightful."

Buglisi Dance Theatre (BDT), under the artistic direction of choreographer and former Martha Graham principal dancer Jacqulyn Buglisi, is renowned for creating powerful, imagistic dances that address social justice and the human condition. BDT's most celebrated and enduring work is the "Table of Silence Project 9/11," an annual, free public performance ritual for peace, global unity, and healing.
Conceived and choreographed by Buglisi in 2011 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11, the site-specific work is a moving meditation performed by a multi-cultural cast of over 100 dancers at Lincoln Center's Josie Robertson Plaza. The performance begins precisely at 8:15 AM and concludes at 8:46 AM, the moment the first plane struck the North Tower. Dancers, clad in white, slowly ascend onto the plaza to the sound of a conch shell's call, forming concentric circles around the fountain to create an ancient Peace Labyrinth. The ritual culminates in a powerful, unified gesture: dancers raise their arms to the sky, symbolizing universal peace and a collective call for tolerance. The project, inspired by a sculpture of 100 white terracotta plates by Italian visual artist Rossella Vasta, transforms the concept of a shared "banquet table" into a powerful, living embodiment of humanity's common threads.
